It happened. It was predicted. Not much was done to stop it. Too many precious lives were lost.
If you’ve been watching the scenes coming out of Turkey and Syria you’ve probably been affected. Maybe you are even experiencing vicarious trauma. Vicarious trauma happens when you feel emotional pain, terror, fear and helplessness from exposure to other peoples’ trauma. For instance, imagining what it’s like to be stuck under rubble from the earthquake, losing your entire family or becoming homeless.
Feeling the pain of others is actually a good thing. It means you’re open to being moved, you’re empathic and you care. Witnessing the pain of others is actually helpful because they are seen, thought of and don’t have to hold the burden alone. It also might inspire you to donate, volunteer or help in another way.
However, too much exposure can be detrimental to your mental health.
How to cope with vicarious trauma.
Take a break from news and detox from social media. You already know what’s going on and have seen the images. Now, turn it off for a day or even a week. You can catch up on everything you’ve missed in the coming days. Try releasing what you’ve seen and have felt by imagining a box that you put your traumatic thoughts and images in and closing the lid.
Reach out for support from like minded people. Talk about what you’re going through with other people who are sensitive to the issue and care as much as you do. Look for a yoga class or a meditation class that focuses specifically on these topics.
Stick to your basic self-care. Just because others are suffering doesn’t mean you can’t have gratitude for your safety and well-being. Try using your five senses and get present. Think of an imaginary place that feels comforting and peaceful.
Give back to your community. If you know someone in your community who is struggling or lonely, reach out and ask what they might need or invite them to do something fun. This can ease the helplessness you might be feeling and put good into the world.
